typing special characters...

There are standard shortcuts you can use to type accented characters. For example, to type an acute accent, type option-e then the letter ('a' in this case). Grave accents are produced with option-`, umlaut with option-u, ç with option-c, etc.

Of course, the crash is still a crash, so we will investigate. Do you have a Crash Reporter log for the crash? (Look in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter for the latest 'eclipse' or 'Notes' log -- eclipse if you're using Standard, Notes if using Basic.) From which application did you copy the character?
